There are different types of viral, Fungal , Bacterial and Nematological diseases which cause serious problems in cotton e.g. CLCuV ,Root rot of cotton , Boll rot of cotton , Stunting of cotton , Bacterial blight of cotton ,and etc
Bacterial Blight of Cotton (Xanthomonas compestris pv.malvaciarum)
Bacterial Blight of Cotton in also known as Angular Leaf Spot of Cotton.
It is a seed borne disease and spreads through infected seeds. As plants grows up, bacteria effects at seedling stage, angular spots are formed and the plant kills. If plant survive at seedling stage the bacteria enters in boll and survive for next season.
Plant photosynthesis effects and stunting occurs. Bolls are smaller than normal ones and have black spots on the surface.
Boll Rot (Diplodia gossyina, Colletotrichum spp. ,Fusarium spp.)
Disease occurs at lower bolls. Warm humid conditions favour the disease; affected balls are dark brown with a white to salmon pink outgrowth. Management practices include seed treatment and resistant varieties.
Wilt of Cotton (Fusarium oxysporium, Rhizoctonia solani )
Wilts are called by many fungi but Fusarium & Rhizoctonia are more serious. Fusarium wilt was first discovered in USA. in 1892.In Egypt it was discovered ten years later. Wet weather conditions favor the disease. 25 ᴼC is optimal temperature for fungal growth. It enters in vascular tissues in plants and blocks the translocation of food and water so wilting occurs. It also causes rotting of seed. Root discoloration, stunting and wilting are common symptoms of this disease.
